Pakistan's Politics in 2009

2009 is about to end with alot of ups and downs, ins and outs in the Politics of Pakistan. This post throws some light on the major happenings of the year in the political scene:

* The Politics of PPP
Pakistan Peoples Party inspite of having power in Center as well as in Sindh, Baluchistan and N.W.F.P. remained under a big turmoil throughout the year. First, it had to face a big public and political pressure on the issue of restoration of judiciary and then it came under the fire of NRO. The strong alliance with ANP, MQM and JUI-F saved the boat of PPP from drowning but yet it's position remained shaky throughout the year.
The rising inflation, the shortage of Gas, Electricity, sugar and flour crisis and many other such issues brought the popularity graph of PPP to a very minimum level.
* The Politics of PML-N
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz gained a huge popularity by having a clear and strong stance on the judiciary issue but the party leadership failed to maintain it's level of popularity because of it's soft tone of opposition in the national assembly! The party enjoyed the tastes of both opposition and alliance with the ruling party by keeping a silence over many issues of national interests. The party also failed to bring a clear and unanimous decision about the operation in Swat. Opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan kept on opposing such millitary operations but on the other hand, the party as a whole supported this operation.
PML-N also failed to raise its voice against growing inflation, lawlessness and American Drone attacks within the territory of Pakistan.
* The Politics of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf
Imran Khan is one of the few leaders who remained straight and bold against american drone attacks and he vocally opposed any sort of millitary operations by the Pakistan army inside the country's border. He raised his voice for dialog and for peaceful settlement of all disputes with Taliban in Swat and Tribal areas.
Imran Khan also raised his voice at every forum against the corruption of the rulers and for the rights of the people of Pakistan. He played significant role in the movement of restoration of judiciary.
Jamat-e-Islami also played a very active role in the politics of Pakistan (outside parliment) and the new Ameer of JI--Munawar Hassan raised the momentum of the party activities after retirement of Qazi Hussain Ahmad. The party had a very clear stance against military operations and Drone attacks. The party is holding country wide protests against American involvement in the country's affairs and people are actively participating in the "Go America Go Rallies " of JI.

Pakistani Political parties—in the eyes of the Public

Politics in Pakistan has many facets and like any third world country, political and democratic system in Pakistan is yet far away from maturity. The feudal system, inherited political strength, “lota cracy” and many other cons are there in the politics of Pakistan.
PPP and PML-N have dominated the political scene for the last two decades and nation have trusted them once again in 2008 election despite of there poor performance in the past. But recent surveys indicate that now the people are less inclined towards these two parties and looking for a real change. How to tackle Talibanization in Pakistan?

After millitary operation in Swat, the frequency of bombing in the cities of Pakistan has also increased which is supposed to be the reaction of this operation! Is it really a reaction? Are the Talibans so powerful and tactfull?
In the fight of two parties, third party which is usually a common enemy, always takes the benefit and tries to fulfill it's hidden motives. Without even the initial investigations, our government feels no hesitation to put the blame on Talibans and thus relaxing those foreign agencies and foreign elements who try to get advantge of the turmoil.
No, doubt, such bombings can't be justified and the culprits can't be appreciated but the question of concern is that how much investigations have been done in this regard and how much of them point clearly to the Talibans? If an anonymous caller claims to be a Taliban and takes the responsiblity of an attack, is it sufficient proof? Definitely not.
The need of the day is to revise our policies, improve the infra-structure of our judicial and investigation system and try to expose the reality.

Talibanization or Islamization?

With the acceptance of Nizam-e-Adal regulation from the pariliment of Pakistan, so-called liberal and moderate forces are making a big hue and cry and they are considering it an open appreciation of millitancy and Talibaniation.
Democracy always obeys the wishes and sentiments of the masses. If the people of Swat are in favour of Islamization and if the constitution of Pakistan also accepts the separate dealing of Malakand agency then this protest and opposition is beyond understanding. Why these liberals are mingling Talibanization with Islamization? In fact this Islamization is the only way to get rid of Talibanization! This is the only way to stop the "public acceptance" of millitant activities. This is the only way for the government to strengthen its roots back in the public.
Nobody denies that the entire Pakistan movement was based on "Two nation theory" and Islam and islamic system was a key slogan during that movement. If it's so then why islamization or Islamic judicial system is paining to some of our Pakistani friends?
Nation needs not to play in the hands of NGOs working under the directions of western lords for their vested interests. It's high time for our government as well as public to change their mindsets to find some way in between the two extremes--Talibans and west.

Peace process in Swat and Video drama

It seems that some hidden forces don't want to see a peace in the Swat region and want to maintain a state of turmoil and lawless ness in that area. The people of Swat felt great happiness over the peace accord between provincial government and the local Talibans and their normal life has been restored but now with the drama of fake video, it seems that this calm environment is not going to sustain!
It's quite meaningful and pointable that why this video was braught into the media at the time when president Zardari was about to sign the Nizam-e-Adal? Even if the video is original (which I dont believe!) then why it was not braught in the media before?
And now, open opposition of Swat accord by Richard Holbrooke and Admiral Mullen has lifted the curtain from the fact that America and Pro-Americans dont want the success of this accord and they are the real culprits behind this fake video drama!!!!

Restoration of CJ-- who won and who lost?

Finally, PPP government couldn't stand in front of the approaching storm of humans and decided to restore all the deposed judges including Iftikhar chaudhry who was an un-acceptable entity for them, calling him "politicized judge" and a man "un-eligible" for CJ's chair.
Who won the battle? clearly the right and the supporters of right won the battle and those who supported the evil or protected the evil, lost the game. credit goes directly to Lawyers, Nawaz Sharif, Imran khan, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Aitezaz Ahsan, Kurd and the entire nation who supported this noble struggle.
Clearly, the power of public and the strength of truth is above all the powers.

Dis-qualification of Sharif Brothers

PCO stained judiciary has declared Sharif brothers as disqualified and at the same time, governer rule has been imposed in the largest province of Pakistan--Punjab, ruling down the majority of PML-N in the assembly. Nation wide protest over this decision shows that people of Pakistan don't accept the PCO judges and any of their decisions.
PML-N has openly blamed Zardari for this disqualification. Nation can expect such indulgence from an NRO driven politician as a free judiciary can un-veil his real face in front of the nation.
Pakistan will continue it's down fall and the people of Pakistan will continue suffer untill such corrupt politicians remain on the scene.

Imran Khan--A ray of hope

The politically deceived public of Pakistan has no more hopes and trust on the traditional selfish politicians struggling for their own vested interests, chanting emotional slogans and fraudulent speeches to make the innocent public fool. These politicians have nothing to do for the betterment of the commoners and the nation's condition is continuously worsening day by day.
In such a dark situation, Imran Khan has emerged as a ray of hope for the distressed people of Pakistan. Imran Khan's progressive vision, philosophy of judicial and economical justice, clear stance over CJ issue, balanced views about FATA and Swat has shown his great leadership qualities. Imran Khan is a politician without any corruption history (very rare in Pakistan).
If the nation wants to get rid of the selfish, self centered and corrupt politician and wants a progressive, economically and politically sound Pakistan, they will have to join hands with Imran khan.

Political war over CJ issue

Pakistan is under a big political turmoil these days. The demand for restoration of Judiciary (Or more precisely Iftikhar Chaudhry), removal of 17th amendment, Drone attacks by US led forces and the worsening state of affairs in Swat and tribal areas are the biggest challenges faced by the PPP government. Zardari and his companions are in a state of mess. At one side, PMLN has started a political war on the basis of non fulfillment of Murree Accord and on the other side, lawyers have intensified their struggle and have announced to have a long march of millions of people at 16th March along with sitting at ‘Shahra-e-Dastoor’ till the reinstatement of deposed judges. Several other parties like Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamat-e-Islami (and many small parties) have also shown their commitment to support lawyers in the movement.
People party on the other hand initially expressed its position quite defensively saying that restoration of CJ and the solution of all other issues is not a one day job, rather it’s a continuing process and they advised PMLN and lawyers to be patient and wait. But now the tone of PPP leaders have changed at and angel of 180. Law minister and many other leaders of PPP are now of the view that Iftikhar Chaudhry has jumped into politics and he is playing in the hands of politicians. They are declaring him as a disputed personality and no more able for a CJ chair. They are also highlighting the oath of CJ under PCO in the Musharraf’s reign.
Whatever the circumstances are and whatever the PPP’s arguments are; the fact remains that Iftikhar Chaudhry has made a new history by refusing the demands of Dictator and not compromising on the principles. He is a man of principles and is a symbol of justice in the un-just, cruel and embezzled atmosphere of Pakistan. He raised voice for missing persons, he struggled to return back the properties of widows and orphans which were occupied by the powerful elites of the society (called ‘Qabza groups’). Entire nation demands restoration of Iftikhar Chaudhry and all other deposed judges and demands November 2’s state of constitution.
